Cale’s Senior Portraits

Saturday I shot Cale’s senior portraits at the barn with Zeus. I’ll give Cale complete credit, the guy has an eye for photography. He envisioned the shot of he and Zeus walking into the sunset when he saw how the sun streamed into the barn late in the day. We built the entire shoot around that idea and came away with some amazing pictures.

And thanks to Zeus for being so easy to work with. I shot some photos of horses last week and Zeus was a thousand times easier to work with.

Quick portraits, bad locations

I like to say you can shoot a great portrait any time in any place. I run into this a lot shooting family portraits. Sometimes locations turn out to be very plain but you have to create great shots anyway. As a challenge I like to shoot portraits of my kids in random spots. I took this one against a small strip of wall in our game room. Cody was nice enough to pose for me. I’m always amazed my kids haven’t grown tired of having their pictures taken.

Judy + Jay Engagement

Last Saturday, I had the honor of shooting a ring blessing ceremony for Judy and Jay. Having never seen a ring blessing ceremony I was really excited. We started at Judy’s hotel to get some shots of her in her dress. This is a great example of how shooting with off-camera lighting can save you. Trying to shoot beautiful portraits in a hotel hallway is basically impossible if the only way you shoot is available light. Using lights, I was able to kill all the ambient light in the hallway, effectively erasing the hallway from the photo. The only thing I used Photoshop for was to take out a few small lights behind her that were further down the hall.

The ceremony itself was held at the St. Louis King of France Catholic Church in Austin. I like the idea of a ring blessing ceremony. It pulls both families together to pray for and celebrate the engagement and upcoming marriage. Here are a few of my favorites from the day.
